CONECT is proud to have its Scholarship program named in honor of such a distinguished man from Rhode Island. Senator Chafee was a great early supporter of CONECT (Coalition Of New England Companies for Trade) and the work that this organization was doing in promoting a trade agenda. He saw that trade generated jobs in many business sectors, design, merchandising, purchasing, logistics, warehousing, transportation, marine terminal dock workers, airport workers, customs brokers, freight forwarders, 3PLs, customs attorneys, CBP positions and many others. The Senator was a visionary that knew how to reach across the aisle and promote consensus through compromise.

CONECT is honored to be associated with this man’s legacy and thankful to be able to provide assistance to American youth in their pursuit of higher education. The Scholarship Program is designed to assist people who will be entering their 2nd year or higher of college/university or graduate school. There are several general scholarship awards provided as well as four Legacy Awards. These are provided by people and/or organizations that share Senator Chafee’s characteristic of VISION. We can’t thank these Legacy Award scholarship donators enough for sharing their vision with our scholarship program.

The Legacy Awards are as follows:

The Donald F. Cameron Scholarship Award
- set up by Don Cameron’s family as a memorial to one of the great contributors to the international trade and logistics industry. Mr. Cameron, a Korean War veteran, worked for a combined 47 years at Cabot Corporation and Bose Corporation, two great New England companies, in the trade and logistics sector. Several of his many accomplishments include being named 1995 Man of the Year by the National Industrial Transportation League, 1998 Logistics Executive of the Year Award as well as President of the MASSPORT Shippers Association which was instrumental in keeping direct call ocean carriers at the Port of Boston. He also wrote a book on JIT Inventory which is still relevant today. This award is geared to an international trade or logistics major.

Gemini Shippers Association Award – This award was established by the Gemini Shippers Association Management team who are very committed to higher education. The organization is a “Not for Profit” group that has been established for nearly 100 years. The association’s membership consists of many consumer products companies and its goals include the aggressive negotiation of global ocean transportation contracts and space allocation keeping their members competitive in their respective fields. The aforementioned management team consists of extremely accomplished industry veterans. To read about each please go to www.geminishippers.com/about-us/the-team. This award is geared to a business related major.

The Dorea International Scholarship Award – Once again, this is an award that a trade and logistics industry management team has committed to the CONECT Scholarship Program due to their desire to promote higher education for our youth. Dorea International Consultants has 50 years’ experience in all aspects of international trade. Their website is www.dorea.com. The award is open to all majors.

The Boston Foreign Commerce Club Scholarship Award – This is the longest running industry group in New England with a mission to encourage discussion and cooperation in pursuit of their members endeavors. The membership consists of individuals whose interests and responsibilities are related to transportation, logistics planning, and other services associated with foreign commerce. In the spirit of their mission statement, the 11 Directors have graciously collaborated with the CONECT Scholarship Program for this scholarship award.
