Sustainability in SCM Studied by Major Importers/Exporters
There is great excitement in the “green” world after Walmart, the world's largest retailer by revenue, asked more than 100,000 potential suppliers around the world [PDF] their environmental and social sustainability. Walmart will require them to disclose the full environmental costs of their products. Supporters of green businesses hope that Walmart’s prompt may lead many companies to start reducing waste, cutting emissions, and improving their own profitability. Walmart is not the only company looking to use such green techniques successfully. Lawrence, Massachusetts importer, nora systems, inc., has been studying their own company’s supply chain techniques in terms of sustainability; they believe that Walmart’s recent move was a wise one that should be replicated. Says Peter Diehm, nora’s Purchasing & Materials Mangager, “I think Walmart’s request to vendors shows us that it is important for New England companies to get more involved with sustainability. People need to understand that sustainability can be a win-win-win situation, for the company, their customers/vendors and the environment.”
